The Creature claims a terrible freedom: without love or hope, nothing can be taken from him. Fearlessness and power are paired to show how despair can harden into menace. The juxtaposition flips a virtue (courage) into a threat. Confidence here is cold and analytic—the calm of someone with nothing left to lose. Shelley suggests that moral bonds, not brute strength, restrain us. It’s a warning about what grows in the vacuum of care.
